August 1 is World Breastfeeding Day. August 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week. Started by the World Alliance of Breastfeeding Action (WABA) 25 years ago, World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is celebrated around the globe to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of children. The World Breastfeeding Week website provides a variety of resources and a different theme each year to use in your celebrations.
WABA works with many organizations to coordinate World Breastfeeding Week, including United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF), World Health Organization (WHO), Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM), International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN), International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA), La Leche League International (LLLI), and Wellstart International.
The Global Big Latch On is held over two days (Saturday and Sunday) during WBW in many communities. It is a worldwide peer support and community development event to bring the community together to support breastfeeding moms and babies. Anyone can host a Big Latch On event in their community. The Women’s Health Action started the Big Latch On in New Zealand in 2005. Portland, Oregon, had the first Big Latch On in the U.S. in 2010. La Leche League got involved in 2011 to spread the Big Latch On across the U.S.A. It has been picked up by WIC, local and state coalitions, and breastfeeding advocates across the nation. Some moms even host the Big Latch On at their homes. Anyone can register to host a site.
In Texas, there are many WBW celebrations held throughout the month of August. Many groups participate in the Big Latch On. Some groups hold walks, fairs, baby showers, health fairs, … Some separate events, others in conjunction with the Big Latch On.
In August 2011, the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) officially declared August to be National Breastfeeding Month. If you miss (or haven’t gotten it together for) World Breastfeeding Week, you can plan a celebration for later in the month!
If your group is holding a breastfeeding celebration in August, send us information (email@example.com) on the event to post on our calendar if it has not yet occurred. If you have media releases from moms and others, send us pictures after the event to post on the TXBC website!
