“A woman’s ability to initiate and continue breastfeeding is influenced by a host of community-based factors. Family members, such as fathers and babies’ grandmothers, are important parts of a mother’s life. It may be important for community-based groups to include them in education and support programs for breastfeeding. Postpartum support from maternity facilities is an important part of helping mothers to continue breastfeeding after discharge. Community-based support groups, organizations, and programs, as well as the efforts of peer counselors, expand on the support that women obtain in the hospital and provide a continuity of care that can help extend the duration of breastfeeding.” Excerpted from The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding
