Texas has over 11,000 licensed child-care centers.
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) staff are working with the Child Care Licensing agency, as well as the agency that administrates Texas’ child care quality rating system, Texas Rising Star, to include breastfeeding/infant feeding and nutrition quality standards (from AAP/NRC Caring for Our Children National Health and Safety Performance Standards; Guidelines for Early Care and Education Programs) into their policies and procedures. Not all of the standards are addressed, but incremental progress is being made.
DSHS also partners closely with the state’s Child and Adult Care Food Program, offering online child care continuing education, as well as a child care training curricula for in-person trainings, and works to integrate breastfeeding throughout state programs, including the early care and education program.
Finally, DSHS staff have been active participants in the UNC Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute’s child care collaborative.
